NFL Coach of the Year Odds Favor Patriots’ Bill Belichick

The 2021 NFL season has reached Week 15, which means that there are only a handful of games remaining before the playoffs. It also means that there are only a few weeks to make a case for why an individual should win one of the many awards, including NFL Coach of the Year honors.

When it comes to the Coach of the Year award, BetOnline is favoring New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to achieve the accolade at -125 odds. Considering how he was tied for the sixth-best odds (+1600) back in August, it’s safe to say that he’s been having a season to remember.

The Patriots had a forgettable 2020 campaign, going 7-9 in the first season in forever without Tom Brady. A lot of people began saying that Belichick was only successful because of what Brady did for the organization, however, he’s proven that may not be the case.

New England has been one of the best teams in the league this season, proven by its 9-4 record and first-place status in the entire AFC. The Patriots have shown they can be dominant on both sides of the ball, averaging 26.9 points for (10th) and an NFL-best 15.4 points against per game entering Week 15.

The NFL Coach of the Year favorite also has Mac Jones looking like a proper NFL quarterback in just his first season. Despite being the fifth QB taken at the 2021 draft, Jones is the current Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite after throwing over 2,800 yards and 16 touchdown passes so far.

Overall, Belichick has proven that his mind for the game shouldn’t be underestimated. He has the Patriots winning by committee and unless things fall off the rails, he should remain in the NFL Coach of the Year conversation.

Kliff Kingsbury NFL COTY Odds

At +400 odds, Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury is the closest competitor to catching Belichick in the NFL Coach of the Year odds race.

The 42-year-old bench boss has done wonders with the Cardinals ever since taking over in 2019. He had a 5-10-1 record with the team that year, improved them to 8-8 in 2020 before sitting at a 10-3 record ahead of Week 15. Up until last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Arizona was the best team in the entire NFL.

Kingsbury has the Cardinals as one of the top offensive teams in the league, averaging 28.2 PPG (T-4th) and an NFL-leading 32.9 PPG on the road. Defensively, Arizona is also fourth when it comes to points allowed, while also averaging the sixth-most takeaways per game. Overall, it’s been a balanced effort on both ends of the field that’s led to the Cardinals’ success.

Still, Kingsbury’s odds could be better than they are if it weren’t for Arizona’s last few games. After beginning the season 7-0, the Cardinals are 3-3 in their last six games. Two of the losses came against the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams, which is understandable, however, another was to the Carolina Panthers. If the Cardinals don't have a strong finish to the season, it’s hard imagining Kingsbury being named NFL Coach of the Year.
