Although Carey’s career was fantastic, her early life was somewhat difficult, being virtually disowned by her maternal family, as her mother decided to marry an African American. Her parents divorced when she was three, and her struggle continued into her teenage years.

Nevertheless, her amazing vocal and musical talent were enough for her to be noticed and that her official career started back in 1988. She made friends with Brenda K. Starr, a rising talent in the music industry, and her breakthrough began when she gave her demo tape to Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records.

Mottola was immediately interested in her and signed her, providing top producers of the time to work on her songs.

It didn’t take long for Carey to skyrocket into stardom. Her first album called Mariah Carey, was already a success, as she claimed numerous accolades for her work. Some of her best songs actually date from the period of her debut album.
