Plenty of Poker Played in Pennsylvania

It was clear that 2023 was a massive year for the gaming industry, and the numbers that recently came out from Pennsylvania only solidified that thought. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board just announced iGaming numbers for December, and report also wrapped up the 2023 calendar year.

Total gaming revenue in 2023 checked in at more than $5.6 billion, and this is a state that has plenty of different gaming options. Revenue grew by more than 9% from the 2022 total, and that could lead to even bigger things in 2024.

This report took all of the action from the various gaming sources, but it was iGaming that once again accounted for a majority of that total. The total revenue from iGaming checked in at $1.74 billion, and that came from online casino games or online slots.

There are currently just six states that allow for online casino gambling, and Pennsylvania is a leader among that group. Other states such as Michigan and New Jersey also announced record revenue totals in 2023.

One thing that has inflated the number in Pennsylvania is that this state has one of the highest tax rates in the country. Operators have been willing to pay that high tax rate because they have seen plenty of success, and things continue to trend in the right direction.

Parx Casino Has Big Year

The report from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board also breaks down the action by each operator, and it was the Parx Casino that led the way. The total revenue at Parx in 2023 was $588.2 million, and that came from a variety of different gaming options.

Table games accounted for $202 million, and poker was a big part of that total last year. Online slots continue to lead the way though as that accounted for $386.2 million in revenue during the last calendar year.

Wind Creek Bethlehem finished in second place in terms of gross gaming revenue, and the total was still a solid $526.3 million. That breakdown between slots and table games was actually much closer as there was just a $43 million difference.

Penn Entertainment continues to set the tone when it comes to iGaming in the state as that operator brought in 41% of the market share. Penn Entertainment just recently made a big move in partnering with ESPN BET on the sports betting side of things.

More Action Online

The online casinos in the state of Pennsylvania brought in $1.74 billion in gross gaming revenue in 2023, and that was easily a record. That revenue has continued to climb every single year since this industry was launched, and that likely won’t change in 2024.

While a good chunk of the gambling action now happens online, the retail casinos in Pennsylvania continue to see record numbers as well. Those commercial casinos posted a gross gaming revenue of $3.43 billion in 2023, which was a slight increase over the 2022 numbers.
