UFC Vegas 39 Odds: Marina Rodriguez vs Mackenzie Dern Preview

After an action-packed weekend, the UFC is returning for more action in just a few days. UFC Vegas 39 is set to go down at the Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, October 9. The card is shaping up to be a good one and it’s headlined by a women’s strawweight bout between Marina Rodriguez and multi-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gold medalist Mackenzie Dern.

It’s a huge bout for both fighters because a win could propel them up the women’s strawweight standings. Currently, Rodriguez ranks sixth while Dern is in a tie with Yan Xiaonan for No. 4. A victory in Las Vegas this week could be life-changing, but only time will tell who the victor will be.

Here’s a look at the odds heading into UFC Vegas 39, courtesy of BetOnline.

Rodriguez Enters as Underdog

Rodriguez will enter her bout with Dern at UFC Vegas 39 as the +147 underdog. The 34-year-old veteran has been on a roll ever since joining the company back in 2018, losing just one bout since 2018. She’s defeated some solid competitors over her UFC tenure, with her most recent bout ending in a unanimous decision victory over Michelle Waterson back in May. The fight was also Rodriguez’s flyweight debut.

Now that she’s back in the strawweight division, Rodriguez’s best shot at winning this weekend is to keep Dern on her feet. The former is clearly the superior striker, landing an average of 4.89 significant strikes per minute on 48% accuracy. Sure, Dern hasn’t been knocked out yet in her MMA career, however, BetOnline is saying that winning by KO/TKO is Rodriguez’s likeliest method of victory (+350). The Brazilian does have a 62% takedown defense rating, although she’d certainly prefer if she could avoid that situation.

Even though Rodriguez is the underdog heading into UFC Vegas 39, victory is a possibility as long as she establishes her game early on.

Dern UFC Vegas 39 Odds

As mentioned earlier, Dern is the -172 favorite ahead of UFC Vegas 39. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert has been on fire as of late, winning her last four matchups in a row. She’s also earned three Performance of the Night honors during that stretch, with the most recent coming during her submission victory over Nina Nunes at UFC Vegas 23 in April.

Dern said that she felt like “championship material” after her victory over Nunes. She’ll get a chance to prove if that’s true depending on how she handles Rodriguez this Saturday. If Dern can get her opponent onto the mat, it’s pretty much game over. Seven of the 28-year-old’s 11 victories have come via submission.

While Rodriguez hasn’t tapped out yet in her career, it’s hard imagining her surviving a ground battle with someone of Dern’s caliber. She’s dominated pretty much every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition that she’s been in and hasn’t been taken down yet in her UFC career. That isn’t even to mention how her four UFC submission wins are the most in the history of the women’s strawweight division. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Dern continue increasing that record as her career goes on, especially with Rodriguez being far from a submission specialist.
